Our guest speaker: Ellen Roome, Advocate for Online Safety, Parental Rights & Founder of Joolsโ Law

Based in Cheltenham, Ellen is a passionate advocate for online safety and parental rights, driven by a deeply personal tragedy. After the untimely death of her 14-year-old son, Jools Sweeney, in April 2022, Ellen has fought tirelessly to gain access to his online data, believing it could provide vital insights into the circumstances surrounding his passing.
Determined to prevent other parents from facing the same devastating battle, Ellen spearheaded Jools' Law. This proposed legal change would give bereaved parents the right to access their children's social media data. Her campaign also highlights the dangers of harmful online content, pushing for stricter online safety regulations and greater accountability for social media companies.
Her efforts have gained international recognition, and she quickly secured enough public support to have Jools' Law debated in Parliament on January 13, 2025. However, Ellen has faced significant legal and financial hurdles, including the costly and complex process of applying for court orders to access her son's digital records. Despite these challenges, she remains unwavering in her mission to challenge Big Tech, demand transparency, and ensure a safer digital world for children.
Through her relentless efforts, Ellen gives bereaved families a voice, ensuring no other parent is left in the dark about their child's online life. Her ultimate goal is to make Jools' Law a reality—not just to help grieving parents seek answers but to protect children from online harm before it is too late.
