What Does a Parish Councillor Do?

A Parish Councillor is an elected, unpaid representative who serves on the Parish Council – the first and most local tier of government in England. Their role is to support the well-being of the local community and help shape the place where they live.

Charlton Kings Parish Councillors work together to make decisions, deliver local services, and support community initiatives that benefit residents of all ages.

Powers and Duties:

  • Levying a Precept: The Parish Council sets a small local tax to fund its activities.
  • Providing Services: Councillors can help manage public spaces and lead local initiatives.
  • Planning Input: The Council reviews and comments on planning applications affecting the area.
  • Problem Solving: Councillors report issues to higher authorities and help get them resolved.
  • Ethical Conduct: All councillors follow a Code of Conduct and declare any conflicts of interest.

How to Apply

Interested in becoming a Parish Councillor? Here's how to get involved:

1. Check Eligibility
You must be:
โœ”๏ธ At least 18 years old
โœ”๏ธ A British citizen (or a citizen of the Commonwealth or EU)
โœ”๏ธ A registered elector or have lived, worked or owned property in Charlton Kings (or within 3 miles) for the past 12 months

2. Look Out for Vacancies
We promote councillor vacancies on our website and noticeboards when they arise—either through regular elections or when a casual vacancy becomes available.

3. Apply or Stand for Election
If a vacancy is open, you can apply directly or stand for election, depending on the situation. You'll be asked to complete a nomination form and provide a short statement explaining why you're interested.

4. Co-Option (if applicable)
If there's no election, the Parish Council may fill the vacancy by co-option. This means we invite applications and select someone to join the Council based on community interest and suitability.

5. Get Involved
Once selected, you'll take part in meetings, help with projects, and work as part of a friendly, motivated team committed to improving life in Charlton Kings.
