Ravensgate Common

Ravensgate Common map

At the top of Ravensgate Hill and accessible from the layby on the A436 near the roundabouts at the junction with the A435, Ravensgate Common is a wonderful area of natural beauty and biodiversity. Recognised by the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust as a Key Wildlife Site (KWS), it has benefited from a National Grid Landscape Enhancement Initiative grant. Over four years, this funding has supported the clearing of gorse and overgrowth, restoration of natural grassland, and the encouragement of native plants and wildlife.

These improvements form part of the Restoring Cheltenham's Escarpment Grasslands (RCEG) project, which aims to enhance the landscape, biodiversity, archaeology, public access, and enjoyment across the Cotswold Escarpment — from the Devil's Chimney and Charlton Kings Common to the electricity transmission line and pylon on Ravensgate Common.

Home to butterflies, abundant wildflowers, and a rich variety of other flora and fauna, Ravensgate Common is a cherished local gem.
